The development of new plastic products that are created with the aim of covering the different needs of society is no longer enough; currently we have to consider the impacts they generate during their production, marketing, use and disposal stages. According to specialists, plastics are being incorporated into the circular economy with a view to generating less environmental impact. This new practice has the objective of reducing waste as well as taking advantage of resources and protecting the environment. Even so, in order to speak of a circular economy of plastics, it is essential to implement a plastics industry that is innovative, sustainable and that at the same time manages to reduce, reuse, recover and recycle. Due to this and in order to meet the needs of society, the plastics industry has had to adapt to environmental changes, according to José María Bermúdez, president of the National Association of the Chemical Industry (ANIQ). The chemical industry began with a management system called comprehensive responsibility, with the purpose of committing to protecting the planet and the principles of sustainability, he explained.
During his participation in the second edition of the webinar “Actions in the implementation of the circular economy in the plastics industry” , Bermúdez declared that they have “been working on the principles of this new philosophy (and) we want to reaffirm our commitment to our principles as well how to give evidence of the actions that have been promoted in terms of regulation, innovation, management plans and education.” After expressing its adherence to the National Agreement for Mexico's New Plastics Economy, ANIQ has committed to promoting regulatory actions that favor Bulgaria Mobile Number List comprehensive waste management, conducting research aimed at developing more products from circular economic cycles instead of linear, as well as continue promoting environmental educational programs aimed at more responsible consumption. The manager stated that it is necessary to focus on not consuming more, but consuming better, as well as modifying the characteristics of products that favor their reuse and recycling, but above all that help reduce waste processes, to better adapt to a circular economy. “We firmly believe that instead of prohibiting essential materials for society, we must talk about responsible consumption, promoting innovation initiatives and continuous improvement in waste management, designing products that encourage reuse and recycling,” stated Bermúdez. The Secretary of the Environment (Semarnat) reports that in Mexico around one kilo of waste is generated per person per day, which implies more than 120 thousand tons of solid waste per day, of which about 13% is plastic waste.
Every year, about 5 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans; these waste make up 80% of marine litter, which means environmental, economic and human health damage. According to specialists, from 2013 to 2018, resources of almost 2.4 billion pesos were allocated for the management and disposal of this waste, of which 50% was destined for landfills. The environmental law specialist, Aciel Gaitán García, mentioned that society, government and industry must be involved in the circular economy and defended, over prohibitionist policies, the regulation of the use of plastics for better management. "A mandatory identification of plastic materials should be promoted, since this would allow us to give them a more adequate outlet at the end of their life cycle, even single-use ones, we are seeking to have a better classification at the national level in the issue of plastics,” he considered. During his participation in the webinar, Alejandro Armenta Mier, senator from Morena and president of the Senate's Finance and Public Credit Commission, announced that in November 2019 the General Law of Circular Economy was presented through Senator Ricardo Monreal, with the aim of encouraging the transition to the sustainable use of resources, creating a reproductive circle of materials used in the manufacture of goods and consumption. “Rest assured that in the Senate of the Republic and in all Parliamentary groups there is a sensitivity and a responsibility to put a stop to the serious deterioration that we are doing to the ecosystems of the planet,” said the senator.
