Available Races
Human - Most humans belong to the Federation, a collection of hundreds of planets from hundreds of solar systems. Earth still exists in this future, but is meant for more of a tranquil paradise rather than a hardened military base. Inside this Federation is Starfleet, which is the scientific and military division, to put it simply. Starfleet also has hundreds of races participating, and many bases that border with the Romulans.
Section 31 is an elite, totally unknown division of Starfleet that handles with security issues. The acts of Section 31 are most often cruel, which goes against what the Federation stands for, but they do ensure the safety of Earth and its planets.
Not all humans are in the Federation. Many wish to be apart from technology (an example would be the eternal "ba'aku") or simply do not need the protection it gives.
Ferengi - These ugly creatures, with their massive ear lobes and little strength love nothing more than profit. Any attacks on another race are either for profit or for defense - nothing more. There are rules put in place to prevent the Ferengi from becoming theives for their profit, but these rules are poorly implemented. It is interesting that only males can own a business; women are not allowed to work for themselves or have their own money.
The Ferengi are devious, which makes up for their lack of strength, and are currently in an uneasy laliance with the humans (or as they pronouce it, "hew-mons").

The Borg - They are the most feared extraterrestrials in the galaxy - or at least in the known galaxy. I say extraterrestrials, but at least a thousand humans have been captured by this race and exposed to a form of operation that changes their entire anatomy. The Borg are part human, part machine, and the thoughts of every Borg drone in the "collective" are linked together. They are resistant to conventional weapons such as guns, and their personal shielding can adapt to the frequency of a phaser or disruptor within a few seconds, rendering them almost invincible.
Once someone is captured, the Borg assimilate them by injecting nanoprobes - small machines that begin replacing the human DNA and in time turn the subject into a Borg. Once assimilated, the konwledge of the subject is shared with every drone in the collective. Their leader is the elusive Borg queen.
Romulans - They were once Vulcans, but rather than share in the emotional and telepathic meditations of their forefathers, the Romulans began to colonize two other planets - Romulus and Remus. In terms of technology, they are quite similar to the Federation, and share similar resources. Still, they are devious and intelligent, and are in striking distance of the Federation, the Klingons and the Ferengi.
Klingons - These fearsome creatures have no fear, and never back down from a fight. They are technologically similar to the Federation, but after their moon, Praxis, was destroyed in Star Trek 6, their resources have been under much strain. They are intelligent, but their hunger for death can blind them.
