Basically it's japanese comics translated into english. Its pretty much the same as american comics but some of the titles are pretty wacky.
In america are books and comics are read from left to right. But the japanese books even when translated into english are read from right to left. Not all manga books are but most manga from Tokyopop is read from right to left but some isn't. At first it looks like you are reading upside down but your not. It's how the traditional japanese manga is so its printed like that in english to preserve the traditions and stuff like that. Its rather easy to read right to left once you get used to it.

Actualy theres more differences, although its debatable.
Generaly manga is written and drawn by the same person (possibly with an assistant or 2 to do grunt work), while the American comic industry has a writer, penciller, inker, letterer, colorist, and an editor. Manga is a style like anime is a style of animation. American comics mostly have a realistic style, and the only American comic I know of thats not in color is Sin City.
Basicly all this means is that manga is usualy released faster and the creator has complete control. Remember though that we get manga here in the US in the form of graphic novels of a few months worth of issues, and its not going to be new cuz it has to do well in Japan first to get translated.
Edit: Oops sry didnt look at the date on the post XD
